The rumors were true and Apple has now sent out invitations to an event that will be streamed live on March 8. The invitation attracts with the cryptic title “Peek Performance” and an illustration of an Apple logo in stylized 3D with features of the cult film Tron.

Apple often plays with the words in its invitations and so this time too. Peek roughly means a sneak peek or peek, but the title of course also refers to “peak performance”, ie performance peak. So what is it that Apple will give us a glimpse of and what new gadgets will be launched? Stay tuned and we’ll go through what the rumors say.

We start with the products we are most likely to see. We know who they are, among other things, because Apple has registered the models in the Eurasian Economic Union’s (EaEU) database, where all products that use encryption must be registered in order to be sold in Russia and the other Union countries.

Iphone SE

Iphone SE (third generation)

Rumors have been circulating for quite some time now about an updated model of Iphone SE, the third generation of Apple’s most price / performance-optimized phone. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will once again keep the Iphone 8 design with Touch ID. Instead, it’s about two things: an upgraded A15 processor and support for 5g. The latter is still something that in practice does not have much effect, but many analysts believe that a cheap 5g model will be able to increase the iPhone’s market share. Apple has registered three variants with the model designations A2595, A2783 and A2784.

Ipad Air

Ipad Air (fifth generation)

Ipad Air is also rumored to come in a new model, which is also said to focus on new components such as A15 processor and 5g, but also an upgraded camera (same wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle cameras as in Iphone 13). Two models are registered: A2588 and A2589).

Ipad (tenth generation)

Although Apple released an update of the regular iPad as recently as September, the company has registered two new models in the EaEU database: A2757 and A2761. One possible reason for Apple to update it so soon is to make internal changes with components that are easier to get hold of for mass production.

None of these seem to justify the “Peek Performance” title, so what is it that can hide behind that clue? Here are some possible candidates.

Macbook Air

Macbook Air M2

One of the most interesting products expected from Apple in 2022 is the new Macbook Air. The previous model was a completely internal update with M1 chip and completely without fan but the same chassis, screen and other as in the old Intel model. The details of the new one are different: Some have claimed that it will have a mini-led screen just like the Macbook Pro 14 and 16 inches, others that it will still be a regular LED-lit screen. According to Mark Gurman, the M2 chip will have the same eight cpu cores as the M1, but 9 or 10 gpu cores against 7 or 8 in today’s model.

But the big news is according to several rumors that the computer will get a new exterior design with similar colors as the 24-inch Imac. It can also get Magsafe just like the Macbook Pro.

Macbook Pro 13 inch with M2

Somewhat strangely, there have been rumors lately that Apple will not release the new Macbook Air this spring. Instead, a new Macbook Pro with a 13-inch screen is claimed to be the first with the M2 chip. It should get rid of Touch Bar but not have many other external news. If these rumors are true, it could be because Apple is simply not ready to launch the Macbook Air due to the new design it is rumored to be.

Mac Mini

Mac Mini Pro

Another product that has been rumored for quite some time but which has so far not seen the light of day is a more professionally equipped version of the Mac Mini with the same M1 Pro / Max chip as the Macbook Pro and more connectors.

Imac Pro

Imac Pro

Although there are plenty of rumors about a new big sister to the Imac 24 inch with a more powerful processor and larger and cooler screen, there are no signs that it will be released next week. It is a computer whose target group is better suited for a launch at WWDC in June, but at the same time it would definitely fit with “Peek Performance”. Especially if they will not start to be delivered in a couple of months but are shown as a “sneak peek”.

Apple’s mixed reality headset then?

A logo in 3d and a “peek” of something new and exciting could be a clue that Apple will show off the ar / vr headset that has so many hot rumors about. However, we have a very hard time believing that Apple would choose to do so at this particular event this spring. A product in a completely new category requires completely new software and then there is no better opportunity than at WWDC.
