Do you have an old computer – Mac or PC – that can no longer get the latest updates of Windows or Mac OS? Running an old version with known security flaws is no further, and installing Linux can feel too technical.

A new alternative is about to take shape at Google, which has just launched a preview version of Chrome OS Flex. The new system is a variant of the Chromebook system Chrome OS which is specially developed to run on older laptops (and desktops) that originally ran Windows and Mac OS.

Google warns curious people that the system is still far from finished and has both bugs and shortcomings in, for example, support for hardware components. The company has a list of computer models where the system has been verified to work.

The list of current limitations is quite long, and we would probably say that one of the more beginner-friendly Linux variants may be a better choice for many. But of course it is exciting with a new alternative to keep old hardware alive.

In addition to consumers, Google also targets companies, as an easy way to test whether a “cloud-centric” operating system can be something.
