Yesterday we received the news that THQ Nordic owners Embracer Group had acquired Gearbox Software, a studio that has a long-standing collaboration with 2K Games for the successful Borderlandsseries. And now it has turned out that the collaboration will continue, despite the acquisition.
For VGC tells namely Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford that Gearbox Software will continue to work with 2K for “known and planned” Borderlandscontent, this is because 2K owns “certain rights” to the series, which Pitchford still describes as “a Gearbox brand”.
This was followed by a statement from 2K Games (via Gamesindustry) which states that the Embracer acquisition “does not change 2K’s relationship with Gearbox or our role as publisher of Borderlandsseries ”. Pitchford adds that he expects “[samarbetet] will continue and that we will create new opportunities together ”.
In short: Gearbox Software and 2K Games will continue to work with Borderlands until we are informed of the opposite, and if the undersigned is allowed to speculate wildly, then Embracer Group’s lawyers are probably going through the paperwork in this now to end the relationship as quickly as possible.
