Last week, Google released a pre-release version of Android 13 for developers. Danny Lin is one of those who has put his teeth into the system, and in a series tweets he shows one of the news in the system.

It turns out that Android 13 (at least in this test version) has a complete virtualization environment with support for sqm, the Linux kernel’s built-in hypervisor technology.

Danny Lin starts by installing various Linux distributions on a Pixel 6: Ubuntu, Arch and Alpine. He also shows how to compile the Linux kernel directly on the phone, while recording the screen.

The next step is more impressive: Windows 11 for Arm in a virtual machine on the same phone. Despite the fact that Windows 11 does not have a driver for Pixel 6 graphics circuits and thus does not get any hardware acceleration, the system is doing surprisingly well in a video Danny Lin has shared on Twitter.

It is quite possible that another Android device with a chip that is also used in Windows on Arm laptops will be able to run virtualized Windows 11 with hardware acceleration.

And here is a mandatory test of Doom, emulated on Windows 11 via sqm on Android 13:
