The world of Horizon Forbidden West is grand in scale, but as you explore, you’ll discover many smaller secrets buried within its landscapes. Some of the more unexpected discoveries include three mysterious relics that reference Midgard, the mythical realm featured in a certain Norse action-adventure game from Santa Monica Studios.

At Guerrilla, we love collaborating and saying hello to our fellow PlayStation Studios players. That’s why, hidden throughout the Forbidden West, these special war totems pay homage to key characters.

Finding these three wood-carved figures will unlock access to a unique cosmetic bonus for Aloy: the legendary Mark of War face paint worn by Kratos himself.

Each of these collectibles was placed in the world with careful consideration by our development team. While we’ll leave it up to you to find their exact locations, we hope this behind-the-scenes look gives you an idea of where to start your search.

We start with a tribute to Kratos’ iconic weapon, the Leviathan Axe. Off the beaten track, Aloy is able to find the fearsome tomahawk buried in a tree. Scanning it with his Focus reveals a trail to an abandoned shack, which mirrors Kratos’ house. Inside, the small War Totem bears the likeness of Kratos.

The Totem of Youth is near an iconic landmark. As you get closer, you’ll discover that it’s fiercely defended by a machine that resembles the creature that watches over Helheim, a specific reference to Atreus.

Finally, the Brotherhood Totem is found in a Cauldron-like structure on an island, reminiscent of one of the locations of Brok and Sindri’s forge. We chose this location because the Huldra brothers are a Norse equivalent of the Greek god Hephaestus (the namesake of the machine-forging AI from Horizon Forbidden West).

“We wanted them to be self-contained, hidden Easter eggs that were intentionally harder to find than our other collectible sets,” says Elijah Houck, Senior World Designer at Guerrilla. “As a result, we decided not to give them map markers or quest tracking so the player could naturally stumble upon them and draw their own conclusions about what the various callbacks are supposed to represent.”

Now that you know the story behind Horizon Forbidden West’s War Totems, we hope you’re inspired to load up the game and do a little Easter egg hunting. And if you already found them, be sure to share your best photos of Aloy and the totem poles on social media using #BeyondTheHorizon!

Horizon Forbidden West is Available now on PS4 and PS5.
