Forget Crash Bandicoot for now, here’s the return of Kao

Update (Thu April 21, 2022): We have a date! Kao the Kangaroo is making its way to Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on May 27, 2022. The game will be available digitally at launch for £24.99 / $29.99, with the physical edition slightly more expensive at £29, 99 / $34.99. Here’s what the developer had to say today:

“We’ve been blown away by the response we’ve received from gamers since we made the announcement Kao the Kangaroo made a comeback earlier this year. With this new chapter, we want to ensure that the new Kao the Kangaroo both honors its past forays and offers fresh, contemporary gameplay for fans new and old alike. This is a complete reboot for Kao, and we can’t wait to see how people get on with it at launch!”

Original Story (Thu January 27, 2022): Kao the Kangaroo is back! We admit that not everyone here at Pure Xbox remembers this guy, but Kao made his debut in the Sega Dreamcast era, before getting 3 sequels on PC, PlayStation 2, PSP, Nintendo GameCube, Xbox and Game Boy Advance.

Kao the Kangaroo is your quintessential 3D mascot platformer. That means a lot of open levels, colorful locations and probably a lot of collectibles to find. While this reboot doesn’t look particularly unique, it checks all the right 3D platformer boxes on first impression.

The team tries to bridge the gap between existing players and people who will choose this as their first Kao game. Kaja Borowko, Head of Studio at Tate, said of the platformer revival:

“During development, it’s been important to us to ensure that Kao’s new adventure feels both like a tribute to his past forays for existing fans, and a fresh, contemporary platformer for newcomers. This isn’t a sequel, this is a complete reboot , and we can’t wait to see players young and old come together to take on the role of Kao again this summer.”

So yeah, it’s not Crash Bandicoot on Xbox yet, but Kao the Kangaroo looks pretty good overall. The game will be launched in the summer of 2022, the actual date is not yet known.
