Youtube may have its shortcomings in some places, but something that Google has worked hard on is that recoding clips you upload should be significantly faster.
Google has developed its own custom-built chip, or rather cards that will make it much faster to recode Youtube clips into different formats.
Google has chosen to call this chip Argos which, among other things, will be able to recode 8K videos to nine other resolutions that can be easily adapted depending on which device or connection the user has.
Google themselves say that with the help of Argos, it will be between 20 and 33 times more efficient to recode clips that upload to Youtube, but in addition to that, Google will also reduce other large costs that Youtube entails, including lower power consumption. Argos is doing everything faster but at the same time it will be a good cost saving for Google.
