With the release of Dead Island 2 approaches as fast as a horde of zombies, we’re here to tell you about some of the zombie types you’ll meet when you visit HELL-A next month.
There are three different variations — Infected, Top And Variant – each with different strengths and weaknesses, but you’ll learn your favorite ways to get rid of each of them (if you’re so inclined). There are also certain zombie killing challenges Dead Island 2 and once completed you will learn more about each zombie to help you find the best ways to kill.
Infected species
Let’s start with the easiest zombies to kill, the infected types, of which there are three – Hikers, Shamblers And runners. Walkers are up first. They have no resistance or weakness to weapons and can be easily slaughtered in one-on-one combat, so they’re definitely the ones you’ll have the most fun with to begin with.
While Shamblers are fragile, rotting and sluggish, they are weak to blunt and explosive damage, but they are resistant to blood damage because they have no blood! Their bones are so brittle that their own attacks often cause their limbs to break off. However, beware of large numbers of these.
As for Runners, they are attracted to loud noises and because they are fast, they can cover ground quickly. They are weak to sharp and bleed damage, but watch out as they have a push attack that will knock you back.
Apex types
The following are some of the more challenging zombie types – Bursters, Butchers, Breakers, Screamers And Slobbers. Bursters are inflated with volatile gas and infectious black blood that spreads the zombie virus and they are quite DISGUSTING. You don’t want to get too close to them when they explode BUT they also damage nearby zombies so use that to your advantage.
Butchers are our least favorite – they feed on corpses regrow their own bodies, so you need to finish them off quickly before they regenerate. They also have terrifying blade-like hands, and you probably hear them before you see them.
Crushers are bloated with autophage-enhanced muscle fibers and their overhead smash sends a seismic shockwave through the ground – jump over it to avoid being knocked to the ground – then take advantage of the Crusher’s momentary weakness. Top tip: You can stop this powerful attack by maiming their arm.
We think the worst type of zombie you’ll encounter are the Screamers. Their voltaic lungs produce a plasma-induced stream of sonic shock waves that force you backwards and attract any zombies in the area. Projectile attacks are the only way to defeat them.
Unfortunately, the best way to defeat our next zombie – Slobbers – is to get close as fast as possible to prevent them from puking corrosive bile and then force them into melee combat. They are resistant to blunt and projectile damage and immune to biting damage, but cut or shock them to do the most damage.
Variant types
Don’t get too comfortable just yet… you haven’t met the Variant Zombies yet! This is when things start to get really spicy. Burning runners will make anything they come in contact with flammable and, as you’d expect, they’re immune to fire damage, but water and chemical bombs will douse their raging flames.
As the name suggests, Grenadier Walkers wear a vest loaded with grenades, ready to explode as soon as they take any damage. It’s better to aim damage at limbs or the head during close combat to prevent the vest from exploding. Finally, Riot Gear Walkers – use melee and projectile attacks to even get close to defeating them – explosives are a great way to knock off that armor.
