Chinese computer manufacturer Lenovo is coming to the mobile fair MWC in Barcelona with a new Thinkpad model which is the company’s first with Arm-based processor.
It’s called the Thinkpad X13S, and it’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8CX Gen 3 chip made using TSMC’s 5-nanometer process. Like other Thinkpad models, it runs Windows, in this case Windows 11 Pro. Thanks to Microsoft’s improved x86 emulation, which now supports 64-bit code, most standard Windows programs work without recompilation.
Considering that the computer is presented in connection with MWC, it is not so strange that it has a built-in 5g modem for mobile broadband.
The computer is primarily intended as a business machine and has several matching features, such as the Thinkshield security platform and support for Microsoft’s Pluton architecture, which protects employees’ authentications against corporate servers in a secure enclave on the chip.
Lenovo has also invested heavily in environmental awareness with large parts of recycled materials. The chassis, for example, consists of 90 percent recycled magnesium and a large part of the plastic in the battery is recycled. In addition, a new soldering technology with lower heat and thus less energy use is used.
