House of the Dragon: All about the new Game of Thrones series

After a long wait, a catastrophic end to Game of Thrones for many and an even canceled spin-off series, it finally seems as if we see some success for the future Game of Thrones spin-off series House of the Tarragon. Namely, HBO has now published pictures from the recording!

Given this development, we thought we would go through what else we know about House of the Dragon. Here’s all you need to know about this “prequel” to Game of Thrones:

When does it take place?

House of the Dragon is based on the book Fire and Blood by George RR Martin, who is also the author behind The Tale of Ice and Fire, on which the Game of Thrones series is based. The events of Fire and Blood, or Fire and Blood, begin about 300 years before the Game of Thrones series. Just like in the said series, the plot here revolves around who will take over the iron throne.

In House of the Dragon, on the other hand, the focus is primarily on the Targaryen family. They are known for their white hair and for being able to ride dragons, which Khaleesi Daenerys Stormborn and Mother of Dragons are related to. After a long period of stable leadership over the seven kingdoms, the Targaryen dynasty begins to fall when King Viserys announces his daughter as heir to the throne.

When does House of the Dragon premiere?

We have not yet received an official launch date for House of the Dragon, only that it will be shown sometime in 2022. Unsurprisingly, it is HBO’s platform that applies, ie HBO Nordic for us and HBO Max in USA. Whether HBO Max will come to Sweden just in time for the premiere date for House of the Dragon remains to be seen.

For those who have the desire, it is now possible to see everyone Game of Thrones seasons on HBO Nordic here!

Who is in the series?

If you were dissatisfied with how the recent seasons of Game of Thrones and therefore are worried that the same will happen with House of the Dragon, then we can reassure you that it is not the same producers behind this series. However, we find, for example, Miguel Sapochnik among the directors, who has been behind fantastic episodes such as Battle of Bastards before.

Game of Thrones
The Battle of the Bastards episode of Game of Thrones’ sixth season is one of the most award-winning episodes ever in any series.

Since House of the Dragon takes place several hundred years before Game of Thrones, we will probably not see any familiar faces from the previous series. Here are some of the characters we have confirmed are in the series and briefly what we know about their story. Note that any possible spoilers appear here, read carefully if you are not familiar with Westeros history.

Characters and actors in House of the Dragon

  • Viserys Targaryen (played by Paddy Considine).
King of the Iron Throne when the series opens and brother of the Daemon Targary. So this is not Daenerys’ brother of the same name, but Viserys the first to live (according to our calculations) nine generations earlier. With his first wife Aemma, he has a daughter, Rhaenyra, whom he raises as successor to the throne. After the death of his first wife, he is now married to Alicent Hightower.
  • Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (played by Emma D’Arcy).
Successor to the throne and daughter of King Viserys and Aemma Targaryen, married to Daemon Targaryen.
  • Prince Daemon Targaryen (played by Matt Smith).
Little brother of King Viserys. A controversial character who was as evil as good. Incest, as you know, is hardly something that Targaryens looked down on, so Daemon is married to his niece, Princess Rhaenyra.
  • Alicent Hightower (played by Olivia Cooke).
Married to King Viserys Targaryen and daughter of the king’s hand, Otto Hightower. We have not been able to confirm whether her and Visery’s sons are in the series.
  • Princess Rhaenys Velaryon (played by Eve Best).
Cousin of Viserys and Daemon Targaryen. Also known as “the queen who never was”, when she was the actual successor to the throne before Viserys, but her cousin was chosen instead when she was a woman. Married to Lord Corly’s Velaryon.
  • Lord Corlys Velaryon (played by Steve Toussaint).
One of Westeros’ most famous explorers, also called the Sea Snake. He is the leader of the House of Velaryon, which is to be richer than the Lannisters and have the world’s largest fleet. Married to Rhaenys Velaryon.
