The Star Wars movies have some of the most iconic dialogue in movie history, yet our original LEGO Star Wars games have none of it. No “Never tell me the odds”, no “Hello there”, no “I hate sand.” People didn’t mind though, since LEGO games were a different beast back then; a hilarious, mimicking beast, yes. Over time, these games became classics and a generation of gamers is rightly nostalgic about them. But when it came to making LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga – now available for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S – we wanted to create a totally new experience, not just a remaster. That meant we got a chance to add a dialogue.

An old Jedi once said, “The ability to speak doesn’t make you intelligent,” but it does allow you to parody classic movie moments in ways we haven’t done before. Besides just making people laugh, these iconic lines can add an extra level of Star Wars authenticityYes† Those original games are hard to follow, but since this is a brand new experience, hopefully fans will appreciate hearing Anakin’s Palpatine-themed alarm clock yell “Dew it!”

The movies are full of iconic lines, so for the story missions and cutscenes, we started by using as much movie dialogue as possible. Fans may not notice that large parts of the dialogue are included in the cutscenes to match the film’s lines to the frame, but hopefully they will feel that authenticity.

When it came to writing original stuff, it was important that the lines were essential to the design, story or character. Each line should direct the player, make them laugh or make the characters feel alive. Keeping lines in the voice is much easier for characters like Han Solo, whom we all grew up with. However, it’s a bit more difficult for lesser-heard characters like Yaddle, for example. Does she inexplicably have a Northern English accent? Probably not. Does she speak in the same cadence as Yoda? Well, good question.

The Lucasfilm Games team were great, always on hand to ensure authenticity was in place, while still allowing us to bring our own type of humor into the proceedings. It’s also worth noting that not every character speaks Galactic Basic (English). We have a plethora of alien languages like Jawaese and Ewokese. There was a time when I had spent so long writing dialogues in Huttese that I answered the phone with “Chuba da naga?” My dedication was so deep that as far as my family and confusing telemarketers are concerned, it was absolutely worth it.

After we approved all the dialogue, it was time to put together our fantastic cast. The voice recording sessions are such a fun part of the process, but they can also be quite daunting. There is a lot of pressure to get everything perfect in such a short time. Luckily, I had some help in the form of human Star Wars holocron, Matt Wood. The guy is Star Wars royalty and I could have listened to his stories for hours. Unfortunately, recording studio time doesn’t come cheap. He not only directed countless sessions, but also lent his voice to various characters. In fact, Matt wasn’t the only “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” alumni to return to the booth, which was exciting as a fan.

I think one of my favorite parts of the game is the fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin at the end of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” purely because it’s all performed by James Arnold Taylor and Matt Lanter. It’s so cool to hear those iterations of the characters portraying that climax. To top it all off, Sam Witwer’s Emperor Palpatine shows up with a fishing rod to find out what’s left of his apprentice. We really wanted to focus the game on the nine saga movies, so having some of the cast from “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” was a great way to show love to the wider Star Wars universe, and I’m so glad we were able to do it.

By weaving dialogue into the game, I think we’ve found a new way to parody these movies, but I can only take a midichlorian amount of credit. Everyone has worked passionately to make this the best Star Wars gameplay experience possible. But Master Yoda once said, “Don’t try. Do or don’t. There’s no trying,” so it’s up to the fans to decide whether we did it or not. I hope we have that. May the Force always be with you.
