Fear and anxiety reign as the darkest stories of Japanese folklore come to life in this first-person psychological horror game of End flame, an independent developer based in Barcelona, Spain. Set in a feudal era, Ikai revolves around Naoko, the priestess of a shrine who struggles to defeat the ghosts of her past and present.
Ikai is a tribute to the psychological horror genre as you take charge of a defenseless lead character incapable of attack. However, it explores a new sense of horror by having the player face the monstrous threats directly instead of combative or fleeing. Every mechanic from Ikai aims to heighten this recognizable sense of helplessness and create an incredibly tense atmosphere as the player travels through various world puzzles.
Of Ikai Since it was EndFlame’s first game as a fearsome team of four, they wanted to take something out of the horror genre that… no one has actually gone for yet. Without spoilers, the developers (obviously) wanted to do something different, and with that in mind, went for a defenseless lead character. Drawing the protective seals as the main mechanic promotes this sense of helplessness with slow, precise, natural and concentrated movements.
“Each mechanic of the game aims to heighten this recognizable sense of helplessness and create a tense atmosphere,” said Laura Ripoll, Producer & Designer at Endflame. The slow, precise movements as a way of interacting resemble real life to promote immersion as something else. With inspiration from games like Bloober Team Layers of fearto movies like The shiningthe main inspiration for the team was an anime called Inuyasha† “Inuyasha is the manga and anime series set in feudal Japan and in a world full of evil creatures from Japanese folklore who chase after the fragments of a sacred jewel that had been pinned down by a priestess until it shattered into hundreds of fragments. From there we took the idea of world building and the role of a priestess as the protector and responsible for restoring peace,” Rippoll says.
Shut up, don’t disturb the evil… Or just run, run away from everything, if you can. Ikai is now available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
