The 24-inch Imac got a new design and a faster chip in Apple’s all-in-one computer, but we’re still waiting for a bigger, faster sibling to replace the current Intel-based 27-inch Imac. Bloomberg reported in May that Apple had put the larger Imac aside to be able to focus on the launch of the 24-inch Imac, but since it is now available, the rumor mill for a larger Imac has started. Here’s everything we know so far about the next Imac.
2022 Imac: The latest rumors
October 20: Ross Young twitter that Imac will get a mini-led screen in 2022.
October 18: The next Imac will probably get the same M1 Pro and M1 Max processor as in the new Macbook Pro.
July 26: The Twitter leak Dylan says that a “high-end Imac” will be launched in 2022.
July 12: Mark Gurman of Bloomberg reports in a newsletter that “a larger, redesigned Imac” is on its way with “an M1X… or an M2X.” He did not mention when, but will probably be released in 2022.
2022 Imac: Sizes, designs and colors
In January, Bloomberg reported that Apple planned to replace both Intel-based 21.5-inch and 27-inch Imacs with new machines, which have a new design and Apple’s M1. Apple introduced its first redesigned 24-inch Imac with a new design.
As for the larger Imac, it will reportedly use the same design as the 24-inch and it is speculated that it can accommodate a screen as large as 32 inches. The current 27-inch Imac is 51.6 centimeters high and 65 centimeters wide. Apple’s new design for the 24-inch Imac makes the smaller than 21.5-inch Imac the replacement, which may mean that a new, larger Imac will not be larger than the current 27-inch Intel Imac after all.
The new 24-inch Imac is available in several different colors, but it has not been reported which colors Apple will use for a larger Imac. The larger one is considered a “pro” model and to create a difference between consumer and pro computers, it can be the same color choice as for the Iphone Pro, or they stick to the traditional silver color.
2022 Imac: Screen
To get an idea of what we can expect from the screen in the larger Imac, we need to look at what is used in the current Imac range, as well as the Pro Display XDR and Liquid Retina XDR in the Macbook Pro.
- 24-inch Imac: 4.5k Retina display (4,480 x 2,520) 500 rivet brightness, P3 and True Tone technology.
- 27-inch Imac and Imac Pro: 5k Retina display (5,120 x 2,880), 500 nits brightness, P3, True Tone.
- Liquid Retina XDR: 2k / 3k Retina display, 1600 nits maximum brightness, 1,000,000: 1 contrast ratio, P3, True Tone.
- Pro Display XDR: 6k Retina display (6,016 x 3,384 resolution), 1000 nits (XDR) or 500 nits (SDR) brightness, P3, True Tone.
Upcoming larger Imacs will have smaller frames than the 27-inch Imac and Imac Pro, which can help the screen reach higher pixel density, without having to make it much larger. A rumor from Ross Young after the “Unleashed” event meant that Apple will use the same Liquid Retina XDR screen that is in Macbook Pro and Ipad Pro for Imac.
The 27-inch Imac will have standard glass on the front of the screen, but for SEK 3,750, Apple already offers a glass with a nanostructure that gives a matte-like finish and does a good job of reducing reflections. Apple will probably continue to offer this. As you can see in the image below, it dramatically reduces reflections in the screen.
2022 Imac: Apple Processor
The 24-inch Imac fits into Apple’s range of consumer products and is equipped with the M1, the same processor found in Apple’s other consumer computers. However, the larger Imac is part of Apple’s pro segment and will have a faster processor. Apple recently introduced the M1 Pro and M1 Max for the Macbook Pro, and it’s likely that Apple will use the same chip in the next Imac. Imac’s slim profile is reminiscent of the Macbook Pro, which means that the M1 Pro and M1 Max work well.
According to Apple, the M1 Pro is up to 70 percent faster than the M1 while the M1 Max delivers up to four times the graphics performance compared to the M1. These are numbers that mean the next Imac is approaching Imac Pro performance.
2022 Imac: Connections
The 24-inch Imac has two USB 3 ports, two thunderbolt 4 ports and a headphone jack. After Apple launched the Macbook Pro with hdmi and an sdxc card slot, we expect Imac to follow suit. The thin chassis can be a problem, but Apple solved it on the 24-inch model by placing the headphone jack on the side. Apple can place the sd card slot in the same way to avoid the Imac getting thicker. However, we doubt that Apple will keep the USB-C ports.
In the 24-inch Imac, Apple placed the Ethernet port in the AC adapter. The same power adapter will probably also be used for the larger Imac.
2022 Imac: Other Features
The 24-inch Imac and new Macbook Pro have improved Facetime camera, which uses M1 isp to provide better image quality. The same Facetime camera is also expected for the larger Imac. It is possible that the camera can support Face ID, as True Depth references have been detected in Mac OS Big Sur, even though Macbook Pro does not support Face ID, despite the flick of the screen. If it does not have Face ID, it will probably have Touch ID built into the keyboard, like the 24-inch Imac.
The current 27-inch Imac has frame memory available to the user. With Apple’s processor, the internal memory is built into the chip. If Apple insists on maintaining the thinness of the Imac, there is a good chance that the internal memory cannot be upgraded by the user. However, Apple introduced alternatives up to 64 gigabytes with M1 Pro on Macbook Pro, so we doubt that memory will be a problem for pro users.
2022 Imac: Price and launch date
According to Bloomberg, the larger Imac was “paused” so that Apple could launch the 24-inch model. There is no delivery date for the larger Imac yet, but the latest rumor from Dylan on Twitter points to a launch in 2022 because “Apple does not want their devices to compete for attention.” As for the price, it will probably be in line with the current 27-inch Imac, which starts at SEK 22,888.
