The handling of personal data is one of the hottest debate issues on the web. New conditions for being able to securely ball user data across the Atlantic are necessary for companies with US-based servers to be able to conduct their business. Meta, who runs both Facebook and Instagram, writes in his latest quarterly report that the services are at risk unless a new regulatory framework is put in place. It writes London-based City AM.

Meta does not talk about a closure in EU countries in direct terms, but mentions that without a new EU-approved regulatory framework, “it would probably not be possible to continue offering some of our most important products”. Meta also mentions that several clauses that currently condition the data transfer are scrutinized by the EU and talk about the possible outcome in pessimistic terms.

How the future will be for Facebook and Instagram in Europe is still under investigation by the data protection authority in Ireland, IDPC, which is expected to make a final plea later this year.

No matter what happens to the clauses reviewed work there is also a new regulatory framework for data transmission between the EU and the US, but exactly when such a thing can be in place, no one knows. However, a proposal will be presented later in February.

Google is another American IT giant that has started stomping more and more impatiently waiting for information. “It’s time for a new regulatory framework for data transmission” the company argued in a blog post as recently as a few weeks ago.
