Overwatch 2 to feature cross-progression and remove loot boxes

The Overwatch 2 reveal event brought us a lot of new information on Blizzard’s upcoming free-to-play “live experience,” which arrives on October 4th.

Blizzard shared an in-depth look at Overwatch 2, confirming that it’ll feature cross-progression but not loot boxes, along with other new details.

“Free-to-play removes the barrier to entry, allowing anyone, anywhere to jump into the game, group up with friends, or find people to play with online,” Blizzard says. “Along with this shift to free-to-play, we’ll be adding cross–progression, enabling everyone to play, progress, and access their unlocked content seamlessly across all game platforms.”

Loot boxes won’t be featured — “instead, the modernised live service will give our players the power to shape their own experiences.” We’ll have the Battle Pass, a new in-game shop, and seasonal content every nine weeks.

Blizzard also shared a roadmap for Season One and Season Two, along with more plans for 2023 and beyond. Junker Queen, who will feature in Season One along with Sojourn and an as-yet unannounced support hero, was given an origin story, as well as an animated short. Season One will also bring us a new 5v5 PvP experience, “reworked heroes, new maps and modes, and more” along with a “reimagined competitive experience.”

Season Two, meanwhile, will bring with it a new tank hero, a new map, and new skins, while the new PvE experience is planned for 2023, along with new heroes, new maps, new game modes, and more.

Overwatch 2 arrives in October, while the beta for consoles and PC arrives later this month. What do you think of Blizzard’s plans for Overwatch 2? Let us know in the comments!
