Internal memory is the single most expensive component of the Raspberry Pi microcomputer, but prices have started to fall again after a few years when they were higher than before and it utilizes the Raspberry Pi Foundation.
Earlier this spring, the organization lowered the price of Raspberry Pi with 2 gigabytes of memory at the same price as the 1 gigabyte model. Now the latter has been removed from the range, and a new top model has been added.
At launch, you could choose 1, 2 or 4 gigabytes of memory for $ 35, $ 45 or $ 55. Now the choice is 2, 4 or 8 gigabytes for 35, 55 and 75 dollars respectively. Swedish prices at the official distributor Electrokit are SEK 429, 679 and SEK 929 respectively.
Eben Upton says ZDNet that the major obstacle to an 8 gigabyte model was not the high prices but the lack of an 8 gigabyte chip. The Raspberry Pi motherboard is so small that two frame circuits cannot fit, and previously, 4 gigabytes was the largest available size.
The Raspberry Pi Foundation has also decided to rename Raspbian to the Raspberry Pi OS. It should clarify which Linux version is the recommended one.
