Review: Black Legend – SENSES

Large and advanced strategy game, but asleep slowly.

I’m a fan of turn-based strategy games and have reviewed a bunch of different ones over the years. Among the favorites are Gears Tactics and Mutant Year Zero – Road to Eden. So when Black Legend appeared in the pile, so I took the opportunity to grab a review copy to see if it could become a new favorite.

The story and the layout in Black Legend is quite straight forward: We are in the city Grant where an evil cult has settled down and taken over. It is now up to the player to liberate the city and save its inhabitants.

The graphics are nice and well made with a high level of detail. The only pity is that the animations are a bit limited and monotonous. Especially during the battles you get to see the same animation, over and over again. The atmosphere in Black Legend is dense and mysterious and it makes it exciting to move through the streets. The voice actors are good and overall it all feels lavish. The story is extensive, advanced and there are thousands of upgrade options; you can develop your avatar almost as much as you like.

The combat system is pretty cool because it has developers based on alchemy. The four stages of Magnum Opus represented in the game as four different colors. You can use these colors to create different attack patterns that give extra damage. It’s a bit fuzzy at first, but after a while you get the cut of it all and then it’s engaging.

The problem with Black Legend – and the reason why I do not recommend it – is that no matter how fun and cool ideas the game creators have, the battles end up being too boring and repetitive. When you finally think that you are going to kill someone, they slip away. bandages and you literally feel your heart sink in your chest because now it will take yet longer before the battle is over… All characters are also very similar to each other at first, so sometimes it is not even very easy to separate friend from enemy. Overall, this is going to be really sad, too Black Legend can be really exciting with their strategic battles. It becomes a little better the more you learn about the different combat techniques and the more things you unlock. But the risk is that many have time to give up on the road. You want to be hooked on a game early and not force yourself to think it’s fun.

So in summary it is Black Legend a nice and interesting strategy game, which had really won at a slightly higher pace and a slightly more varied set-up. It’s good, but it does not really reach the higher altitudes.
