Scarlet Nexus looks very good – new gameplay from the action role-playing game

Watch both main characters fight with supernatural forces against bloodthirsty mutants.

Bandai Namco has revealed a bit of how their upcoming action role-playing game Scarlet Nexus works, specifically the battles. In these two clips, you will see brief previews of the two main characters’ combat characteristics plus an insight into the mechanics behind attacks and the user interface. For example, we see that the standardized functions of surveyor, keypad and mini-map can be found in Scarlet Nexus, but exactly what all the icons mean is unclear. From what we see, you can bring with you two assistants as support on assignments.

The most prominent in the clips are the psychokinetic forces themselves unique to the characters. It is with these supernatural powers that the player defeats the mutants. We know that Yuito and Kasane have unique characteristics and weapon abilities, which can offer drastically different playing styles. Furthermore, the assistants reinforce the main characters with their own abilities. For example, Yuito needs the help of his friend Tsugumi with SAS to locate an invisible enemy. Whether you will be able to freely choose which companions you take with you or not remains to be seen.

After looking at the material a number of times, I feel convinced that the combat mechanics are working well. Best of all is that it also looks very clear and fun to mash mutants with debris from the environment. Animations and effects look very good and the sounds are wonderfully sharp. My only concern about combat mechanics is that you seem to have to do short QTEs in many psychokinetic attacks. Only in the two clips here we see seven different prompts for varied attacks. They are reasonably intuitive in relation to the attacks, although the risk is still that they will be protracted if the battle parties are long.

Overall, Bandai Namco gives the impression of charging its big guns this year, with both Tales of Arise and Scarlet Nexus, two games with seemingly very high quality. I would be lying if I said I was not looking forward to these titles. Both role-playing games with the story in focus, one science fiction, the other fantasy. What more could you ask for?

Scarlet Nexus will be released on June 25 for Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X as well as PC digitally.
