Disney’s streaming service Disney Plus was launched in Sweden during the autumn and has since been mostly relevant for Star Wars and Marvel nerds and families with children. Now Disney is planning to change that! Today, they present for the first time new titles from Star, which will complement the range with more mature content from, among others, Disney’s other studios FX, 20th Century Fox, Searchlight.
Disney was careful to point out during the press conference that users now, due to the expanded content with titles for an older audience, needed to enter their passwords to access more mature material. However, this is not about excessive violence or filth, but only titles aimed at young adults and adults.
The list of materials that will be available already at the launch of Star on Disney Plus on February 23 includes several critically acclaimed film classics such as Pretty Woman, Die Hard, Grand Budapest Hotel and Shape of Water. The range is also expanded with series such as How I Met Your Mother, Family Guy and American Horror Story, which were previously available on Swedish Netflix.
In addition to these familiar titles, Disney took the opportunity to hint at upcoming, exclusive series. Among other things, Solar Opposites, a cartoon from the creators of Family Guy, which follows an alien family that landed in the United States.
With the launch of Star, Disney will also increase the subscription cost from SEK 69 a month to SEK 89 a month, or SEK 890 a year. If you already have a subscription or have time to get one before 23 February, you will not have to pay the full price until six months later.
Disney ended its press conference with something that could be interpreted as a hint to the current market-leading service Netflix that Disney Plus will continue to have only one subscription for all users, where all resolutions and functions are available. As many of the titles presented today have previously been available on other streaming services, we suspect that this advancement from Disney Plus will make many of the competitors in the market sweat.
