Just in time for the series’ 25th anniversary, the Star Ocean series is back with Star Ocean: The Divine Force. The announcement comes with one trailer which shows both parts of the game’s intro and gameplay. The series seems to have completely scrapped turn-based battles in favor of hand-to-hand combat in direct time, perhaps most reminiscent of Monster Hunter World or Yslater parts of the series.
Story-wise Star Ocean: The Divine Force seemingly as independent as other parts of the series. The two main characters Raymond and Laeticia must, together with other crew members, explore a planet they have been shot down by the Pangalactic Federation.
Just like seeing most of the other parts of the series, it’s the studio Tri-Ace which builds The Divine Force. The character illustrations are made by the artist Akiman, who also worked with Street Fighter and the previous game in the series, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness.
In terms of gameplay, the new game will put more emphasis on exploration and give you the strength to travel relatively freely across the terrain through what is essentially a form of gliding. As I said, the battles take place in real time without random battles; all monsters and monsters can be seen directly in the area.
Star Ocean: The Divine Force will be released on an unconfirmed date next year and will be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S and PC (via Steam).
