Tasks: Google wanted to buy Epic to avoid app fights

According to new legal documents published, Google considered buying all or part of Epic Games in connection with the companies coming into conflict over Epic’s app Fortnite, reports The Verge.

According to Epic, Google felt threatened by their plans to circumvent Google’s official Play Store fees by distributing Fortnite in other ways.

Google has gone so far as to share its monopoly profits with business partners to secure their approval to exclude competitors, and has developed a series of internal projects to deal with the “contagion” they perceived to have arisen from Epic and others who want to offer consumers and developers pro-competitive alternatives, and have also considered buying part or all of Epic to allay the threat “, writes Epic themselves.

The documents do not reveal whether Google actually contacted Epic Games regarding similar plans. Nor do they reveal when Google should have had the internal discussion about buying Epic.

In a comment to The Verge, a Google spokesperson said that Epic’s interpretation of the situation is questionable.

“Epic’s mood is unfounded and gives a false picture of our business conversations. Android enables more choices for mobile, developers and consumers,” said Google’s spokesperson.
