Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2 MAX – Tuned audio with brilliant battery life

When the Stealth 600 Gen 2 Max showed up for review, I didn’t think it would break into my established lineup. This reviewer has been using Astro headsets for years, namely the A40 and A50 series. However, during my time with the Gen 2 Max, it has completely won me over and has become my wireless headset of choice over other options.

The Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2 MAX is, of course, a refined version of the Gen 1 headset, but it does bring some significant improvements. The first and most notable is battery life; Turtle Beach says it has the company’s longest battery life to date. You’re looking at nearly 50 hours on a single charge, and during our review time I must have gotten close to that number and sure enough I didn’t have to plug it in.

The Gen 2 Max also has a flip-to-mute microphone, although it didn’t yield quite as strong results. It works as intended and the flip/snap movement is satisfactory, but the quality of the microphone leaves something to be desired. It’s not bad, but the people I played with said my voice sounded clearer with other headsets, which to me were typical Astros.

However, the sound quality of the speakers themselves is a big jump above the microphone quality. As usual there are 50mm drivers here, but Turtle Beach’s ‘Superhuman Hearing’ audio tuning is a brilliant addition. It works fantastically well in first person shooters, where enemy footsteps and gun sounds can be easily located. There are also a few other built-in presets, such as bass boost and treble boost, which are ideal for a more bombastic sound. These are easy to go through via the push of a button on one of the ear cups.

Speaking of which, the ear cups themselves are very comfortable for long periods of time, which I didn’t think I’d say after using the headset for the first time. They have a slightly odd shape and don’t feel too comfortable right away, but it’s almost like the headset gets more comfortable the longer you wear it. Oh and they have breathable fabric instead of faux leather which is an absolute must for me.

Aesthetically, this headset won’t win any beauty contests, but we love its sleek, minimalist look. With the Gen 2 Max, Turtle Beach has opted for a single-color scheme instead of covering it with green accents like previous designs, which is appreciated. It makes it look a bit more ‘mature’ and would fit into most gaming setups on any platform.

However, the feel of the headset is a bit tacky. It’s not bad, and again it all seems to come together once the thing is on your head, but shake it up beforehand and things rattle a bit, maybe a bit too much for a £130 headset. That said This thing is pretty light for a wireless set with 48 hours of battery life, and if the plastic means a more comfortable headset in the long run, I’ll make that trade-off.

All in all, this is a brilliant wireless headset. As mentioned, I didn’t really expect this one to creep into my setup, but it is and probably will stay there. It’s very comfortable for long sessions – which I haven’t always experienced with Turtle Beach – and it all works seamlessly on Xbox, albeit with a small USB dongle required, as is the norm for third-party wireless Xbox devices. I’d love to see improvements to the mic and overall build quality, but it gets everything else pretty much perfect.

Okay, let’s see if we can drain this battery.

Alternatively, the Stealth 600 Gen 2 USB is also a new offering from Turtle Beach at a slightly lower price point:

“The Turtle Beach” Stealth 600 Gen 2 USB wireless amplified headset delivers high quality game audio and chat on Xbox or PlayStation. A battery that lasts longer than 24 hours means less charging and more gaming, while a lossless, low-latency connection is handled by Turtle Beach’s proprietary lag-free 2.4GHz wireless USB transmitter.

Players experience immersive, spatial 3D surround sound* through 50mm speakers and crystal clear chat through the Gen 2‘s flip-to-mute microphone. Soft, ProSpecs Glasses-friendly ear cushions provide plush comfort, and easy access controls allow players to customize their settings and activate features such as superhuman hearing for a proven competitive advantage.”
